TRANSCRIPT

This is The Joyful You Podcast, episode 92, Two Secrets to Success.

Welcome to The Joyful You Podcast.

On this show, I talk all about the tools you need to cultivate a healthy relationship with food, your mind, and your life.

I’m your host, Rachael Collins.

As an eating psychology practitioner, a certified life coach, and a weight loss expert, it is my mission to show you how to work with your body, manage your mind, process your emotions, and create supportive habits so you can live well, feel well, and become your strongest, healthiest, happiest, most amazing self, a joyful you.

Let’s do this.

Happy Fourth of July if you live in America.

I hope you are having a fabulous day and celebrating our Independence Day today.

My kids are coming over tonight and we will do a little barbecue, and we always have homemade ice cream.

It’s a tradition that my mom started that we’ve kept.

So we’ll eat homemade ice cream with all the toppings.

Yummy, yummy.

And we will watch the fireworks.

I live up in the mountains, and from my back patio, you can see out into the valley for probably, oh, 30 miles or so, which encompasses a lot of cities and a lot of towns, and they all are having their fireworks shows going on, plus everyone doing their personal fireworks.

So it’s like this huge firework palooza, and it’s just really fun to just sit and hang out and eat ice cream and watch all the fireworks going off.

So that is what I will be doing tonight.

Now, today for the podcast, what I wanted to share with you are two secrets to success.

This week officially marks the Midway Point of 2024, and I love to use this six-month mark where six months has gone by.

We have six more months of the year.

I like to kind of evaluate where I want to go.

Where I am along the journey.

Do I like the choices that I’m making?

Do I like where I am?

Do I feel like I’m headed in the right direction?

Or do I need to flip a UEE and get back on the right road?

So this past week, I have been thinking a lot about goals and successfully accomplishing our goals, and I was thinking about some of the things that get in the way of our goals and can become roadblocks.

And what do we do when we hit those roadblocks?

Because we are probably definitely more than likely going to come up against a block or two.

So the first thing that I want to tell you is perfectionism.

I really think the dieting and the self-help world has really helped to drive the idea of perfectionism home.

And this sounds like a good thing.

It sounds noble and like it’s the one way to reach your desired destination.

But perfectionism is not the way.

I was actually just talking about this with my girls.

My two youngest at home have decided that they are going to do a 75 soft, which is their version of a 75 hard.

And if you don’t know what a 75 hard is, basically it is a list of rules.

I think there’s like maybe five of them that you have to follow perfectly every day for 75 days.

And if you miss one rule or you miss one day, you have to start all over again.

Again, here’s the idea that if you want to be successful, if you want to achieve something, you have to do it perfectly or else your punishment is erase everything that you’ve already done and you have to start over again.

So you better believe that I talked to my girls about this.

I think that it’s great that they want to set goals and that they want to challenge themselves.

But I wanted to make sure that they knew perfectionism is not the way.

So what they decided was that they’re just going to do their best, but if they miss something or if they miss a day, they’re just going to keep going.

They don’t have to start over again.

So secret number one is to be at peace with imperfection.

You do not have to be perfect to be successful.

That is a lie.

I sent out an email to my list this week.

In my email, I wrote that the goal is just to hit the target.

We don’t have to hit a bullseye every time.

If we’re simply hitting the target, we win.

Now a lot of us think that the target is to fix what’s wrong with us.

Newsflash.

There isn’t anything wrong with us.

The reason that we set goals is not to fix ourselves.

The reason that we set goals is to work towards achieving something.

It’s to grow ourselves.

It’s to become more like our father in heaven, more like Jesus Christ.

And along that same thinking, if you find the idea of being imperfect difficult, then another thing that you can try is changing your definition of perfect.

What you think perfect means.

The Greek word for perfect is teleos, or something like that.

I don’t speak Greek, but it means complete or whole.

So if we define perfect as whole, it changes things, doesn’t it?

It changes perfect from meaning to be without error into something that means having all the necessary parts.

So you are already perfect because you have all the necessary parts.

You have everything you need already inside of you to be successful, to succeed.

When I was in my eating psychology training, my instructor used to always talk about how the acorn has everything already inside it to become a mighty oak tree.

Same with us.

God has put everything we need perfectly within us.

He created us perfectly.

His plan and the way that the world is set up is perfect.

The way that he set up opposition that we need both the good and the bad is perfect.

The way his plan accounts for us making mistakes and things getting messy at times is okay.

It’s perfect because of Jesus.

And Jesus is and will be the only one who did everything perfect.

And because he did, we don’t have to.

And that’s perfect.

When we spend so much time getting caught up on being perfect, we hold ourselves back.

When I was training to become a life coach, Brooke Castillo used to always tell me to shoot for B-, not A+.

She said, you will get the same degree whether or not you get all As or B-s.

And it’s so true.

Focusing on doing B-

work frees up all of our perfectionism thinking that holds us back, right?

It overwhelms us.

It takes up so much time because we’re always trying to fix things and make everything perfect, and it just keeps us stuck.

We will have so much more momentum if we’re moving forward.

If we’re stuck in trying to do everything perfectly, then we’re not moving forward, and it’s really easy to lose momentum.

Now the second secret is to have fun.

The journey to success is supposed to be fun.

If it’s draining, if it feels forced, hard, itchy, heavy, miserable, tedious, or unenjoyable, of course we’re not going to want to keep doing it.

Getting caught up in perfectionism and having to start over and over and over again if you mess up or if you make a mistake, trying to fix yourself to prove your worth or that you are special too when you already are is not fun.

And when things aren’t fun, we don’t want to do them.

Of course we don’t want to do them.

Now, it is the process that is fun.

The success is just a cherry on top, and there is always a way to make the process fun.

There’s always a way to make it fun.

When I was younger, my sister and I used to play library, and we would get every single book in the whole entire house, bring it into one of our bedrooms, and we would spend hours making little checkout cards to go in each book.

Because that’s how libraries worked back in the day.

There were no computer checkouts then.

You would pull out the little slip inside the book, write your name and date on the checkout card, remember?

And then you give it to the librarian, and the librarian would file it away in this huge filing cabinet.

So my sister and I, we would organize all the books.

We would put them alphabetically or by color or by topic.

However, like we would just switch it up every single day, maybe several times a day.

We would come up with all these creative activities and events to try to get more patrons to come visit our library.

We spent weeks and weeks and weeks playing library because it was so much fun.

But here’s the thing.

We never once had anybody come to check out a book.

Never once did we have anyone come to one of our events or our activities that we held.

And if we look at it like this, then I guess you would say that, yep, we weren’t successful.

We never achieved success.

But you know what?

It didn’t matter.

It didn’t matter.

Because what mattered was that we had fun while we were trying to succeed.

And that’s what matters with our goals too.

That’s what I want to encourage you to do.

Have fun.

You know when you are planning a trip.

Like last year, we took our kids to Nashville and Memphis, Tennessee.

And we planned what we were going to do, the sites that we wanted to go see, all the places and the people that we wanted to go visit.

We planned our flights and our rental cars.

You know, all the planning that goes into taking a vacation, right?

And the planning was so fun.

It was so fun coming up with an itinerary, and it was so fun trying to come up with things that we thought our kids would like, because my husband and I both grew up in Tennessee.

And so we had so much fun going down memory lane and wanting to take our kids there.

All of this happened when we were planning our vacation.

And if for some reason we ended up not being able to take the trip, the planning and the dreaming, all of it, was still worth it, because it was almost more fun, if not funner, than the trip itself.

So my point is, sure, success is fun, but you know what’s even more fun?

The journey to get to the success.

Make the journey fun.

Alright, so my two secrets to success are one, let go of perfectionism, and be okay with imperfection.

And then two, make the journey fun.

Find a way to make all of those things that you have to do to reach success fun.

There is a way, I promise.

We can make anything fun.

Alright, I hope you’ve enjoyed this podcast.

Now, if weight loss is one of your goals, then listen up.

I hear from so many of you that are trying to lose weight, and you are doing all the things, and you’re wondering why it isn’t working.

I know how frustrating and deflating this can feel.

So, for the month of July, I wanted to do something that I think is so, so fun.

I’m so excited about this.

I am offering free Drop It Like It’s Hot weight loss strategies.

So, essentially, it looks like this.

You will let me know you want one.

You will fill out a questionnaire that I send you that just is asking you about your weight loss, what’s working, and what’s not.

And then I will design a weight loss blueprint specifically for you that will help you drop the weight like it’s hot, because we are in July and it is so hot.

Okay, but here’s the thing.

I’m only doing a few of these each week.

So, if you want one, you can either email me, rachel.joyfulyou.com, or send me a DM on Instagram.

And then once they’re gone, they’re gone.

All right, thanks for being here.

If you are celebrating today, have fun and be safe, and I will see you next week.

Bye bye.
