The Quest for THE “Perfect” Diet
Searching for the “perfect” diet?
Are you confused by the 1,000’s of diets, programs, and expert endorsed ways to eat that are out there?
Maybe you areeven so confused that you feel stuck and honestly you have no idea what to even eat, when to eat , or how much to eat anymore.
Does this sound like you? Welcome to the club, you’re not alone.
You see, we’ve all been fed this lie that the “perfect” diet is out there, and once we find it (IF we can find it), we’ve found the Holy Grail with all its miraculous powers to provide happiness, a perfect body, eternal youth, and the “perfect” abundant healthy life. So, we go on a quest for THE “perfect” diet. We look all over for it – from experts, books, friends, social media feeds. One expert swear by it this particular way of eating, your friend (real-life or social media) lost 50 pounds on this particular program and “if he/she can do it so can you”. What about that NY Times Best Seller that promises a pound a day or younger skin, or even cancer-free? It all sounds so good, right?
So we become NUTRITION REFUGEES. Someone who is looking for the one perfect diet by going from one program to another. We follow that particular miracle-producing nutrition system (AKA diet) and if we deviate at all, we get angry at ourselves for not having enough willpower. We’ve spent so much time learning about it, believing in it, and sacrificing to follow it as THE “perfect” diet, that when we “fall off the wagon” we get angry and see ourselves a having failed (yet again?). Then we tend to binge eat and have many of our “last suppers” -eat now or forever hold your peace- while we shop for the next “perfect” diet that’s definitely going to work this time.
This journey is filled with so many limitations, frustration, narrowness, and failures -lots and lots of failures. But next time we’ll have more willpower – right?
Let me let you in on a little secret. . . . . .There is no ONE “perfect” diet out there. At least not the kind we’re looking for. All those “perfect” diets the experts are recommended and swearing by will fail you again and again. Notice I said the diet will fail. It’s not your fault. Just because one diet worked for someone doesn’t mean it will work for everyone!
The “Perfect” diet is actually a way of eating that works for YOU (on an individual level). It should feel good – not forced or restrictive, it should give you energy and health, and most of all, it should bring you joy. It should be something you can do every single day of your life. It should be flexible and change with you as you and life around you changes. That’s THE “perfect” diet.
How do you find it then? How do you find what works for you?
You eat with intention and attention, you experiment, and you listen to YOUR body. Only YOU know what works for YOU!
